Tips

Good planning is key to the successful completion of any printed or electronic project. Following are tips
for working with a graphic designer and getting the results you want.

Getting Started

  • Anticipate your completetion date.
  • Start early!
  • Gather all the information you want to include in your project
  • Be sure to provide complete contact information, addresses, phone, fax, e-mail or licence information to be included.
  • Find printed pieces or web sites you like.
    • Collect materials from competitors, companies and advertisements that illustrate the "look" or format you wish to achieve.

General Guidlines for Project Development.

  • Logo design: two weeks minimum for intial designs: one to three weeks for final designs and developement of stationery/business card package.
    • Printing stationery: Allow 7 days + shipping
  • Brochures (assumes text is ready to go):
    • Design/layout: 4-7 days for intital layout (depending on content).
    • Printing: Allow 7 days plus shipping for normal turnaround
    • Printer's p roofs add to turn around time.
  • Books: quoted per project
  • Posters:
    • 2-4 days layout
    • 3-4 days output
    • Trade show booth displays: quoted per project
  • Publication: Allow at least three-four weeks for development of small brochures, ads etc. prior to publication deadline. Build in time for proofing.
  • Websites: General: 2-3 weeks for initial site design
    • 4 weeks ± for site completion or as quoted per project

Adding Content

Copy writing/copy editing:

  • Copy development may require a professional. If you require copy writing allow up to three months addtional time prior to starting the design/layout phase (depending on the size and scope of our project).

Photography:

  • Professional photography may be required if you have no current photos or your products or services require the expertise of professionals.
  • Provide high resolution photos for for all projects except web sites.
  • 72 dpi digital photos are fine for web sites. They may or may not work for print reproduction .
    • Photos downloaded from websites are not suitable for print production. They cannot be enlarged.

Proofing

Careful proofing is vital to the success of your project.

Your designer will proof to make sure all elements of your project have been included to your specifications, but final proofing and approval to print or upload a project rests on the you, the client. Avoid costly errors, always remember to proof:

  • Company name
  • Address
  • Contact information
  • Dates
  • All headlines, copy content, photo captions
  • Photos, graphics, color
